Sobre el sitio Metal: Eye Witness y sobre quien escribe

Metal: Eye Witness no es otro portal de noticias genéricas de Rock & Heavy Metal. Este espacio que ocupo en el éter digital es como la columna editorial de una revista, un compendio literario y visual totalmente subjetivo, parcial, donde mi opinión personal es la que manda. Llámenlo blog con pretensiones de sitio web, si quieren. Aquí no busquen las novedades de último momento que pueden encontrar en cualquier otro lado, ni actualizaciones diarias o coberturas periodísticas hechas por compromiso. En este sitio les presentaré artículos, entrevistas, galerías fotográficas, coberturas de shows y mucho más, pero a mi gusto y discreción. Sin presiones por mantenerme al día, ni obligación de complacer a terceros. Ésta es mi morada virtual sobre el género que amo, el Metal, sobre mi pasión por la fotografía y la escritura, y por los artistas que admiro y disfruto. Sin empleados, sponsors, ni jefes. Es mi profesión y mi obra, la Voluntad de Uno.
Inaugurado en el 2008 con un diseño previo mucho más simple, Metal: Eye Witness ha crecido enormemente. Además del nutrido apartado de Fotografía, tal vez la “estrella” del sitio, la sección de Videos de Youtube, de factura casera, y la Tienda de “material seleccionado”, son otras de las secciones de las cuales estoy muy orgulloso y que complementan muy bien mi tarea principal. Pido disculpas por la lentitud con que todos mis trabajos más antiguos (fotográficos y escritos) de los ‘90s y primeros 00’s, van encontrando su lugar aquí. Irán apareciendo a fuerza de revisar archivos, revistas, cassettes, discos duros, libros y demás reliquias que todos los que trabajamos en esto atesoramos desde nuestros inicios.
Empecé mi carrera como cronista/redactor/editor (reniego hasta el día de hoy de la palabra “periodista”) y fotógrafo allá por 1992, de modo amateur, para profesionalizarme cuatro años después, luego de estudiar en T.E.A. y en el Fotoclub Buenos Aires. Sin embargo, considero que los verdaderes “laureles” de una profesión, y la experiencia misma, se ganan en la trinchera con años de perseverancia, esfuerzo y perfeccionamiento. Mi verdadera Escuela fue esa misma trinchera donde fui y soy a la vez testigo, participante e Individuo en una corriente artística como ninguna otra.
Con un fanzine sobre mi banda favorita (Las Cruces de Sabbath) y un programa de radio independiente a cuestas, me animé a apalabrar al periodista y editor César F. Rodríguez en la vieja radio Heavy Rock & Pop. Así logré mis primeras colaboraciones fotográficas en la recordada revista Madhouse, y escribí mis primeras líneas relevantes en la última etapa del prestigioso medio gráfico que fue La Maga. Al poco tiempo pasé a formar parte del selecto staff de la revista Epopeya, y a colaborar asiduamente en otras publicaciones como Generacion X y Sex & Rock & Roll, todas editadas en Buenos Aires. Después llegarían más participaciones en diferentes programas de radio, y una continuidad como cronista y fotógrafo en Epopeya que me llevó a comenzar a viajar al exterior y conocer ciudades, personas y lugares de varios continentes, para volver y contar, en palabras e imágenes, el encuentro con muchos de mis héroes musicales.
Entre fines de los 90’s y principios del nuevo milenio, me desempeñé además como jefe de prensa del sello Nems, a la par de mi tarea periodística.
En 1999 fundé junto a un grupo de amigos el sello/productora Blackstar C.P., dándole un lugar a algunos de los artistas más relevantes del metal argentino, y mostrándolos también en el exterior. Blackstar C.P. ha evolucionado desde la edición de cds (¡ya lleva más de 30 producciones editadas!) y organización de shows, hasta incluir hoy en día la distribución física y digital de títulos propios y de otros sellos en diferentes tiendas de todo el mundo.
En gráfica continué formando parte de una aventura en formato revista llamada Réquiem, tanto en su versión impresa como online, una suerte de continuación de las recordadas Epopeya y Madhouse. Un trabajo que sin duda cargamos al hombro un montón de colegas y amigos, manteniendo prestigio y calidad. Además, he colaborado (y aún lo hago) esporádicamente con las revistas Jedbangers, Efecto Metal, THC y un sinfín de zines y publicaciones independientes (y sin buscarlo, también con todos los periódicos más importantes del país); y he formado parte durante bastantes años y hasta el día de hoy del staff de las legendarias publicaciones La Heavy (ex Heavy Rock, tal vez la revista de Metal de habla hispana más longeva del mundo – publicada desde 1983) y Kerrang!, junto a su mellizo sitio online Mariskalrock.com, ambas de España y de la mano de Vicente “Mariskal” Romero. También colaboré con la revista de rock pesado más prestigiosa del mundo, la Metal Hammer de Alemania. Actualmente, también soy parte del staff de la revista norteamericana Via Omega (nacida en 2016) que, aún joven, ha logrado ya adquirir en poco tiempo una magnífica reputación en todo el mundo, a fuerza de difundir no solamente Metal si no artistas plásticos/gráficos, escritores y genios por doquier de diferentes estilos musicales y ramas del arte. Tanto en su formato impreso como digital, la calidad es la premisa, y sumar mi trabajo para llegar a un público que no es de habla hispana ha ampliado considerablemente mis horizontes profesionales.
A fines del 2008 edité junto a Arts Publications, solamente para USA, mi primer photobook, un minilibro de 100 páginas a color que lleva el mismo nombre que este sitio, Metal: Eye Witness. En él compilé muchas fotografías de mis primeros 14 años en la fotografía, en su mayoría de los gloriosos años ’90s donde la magia de la película y el revelado manual no entendían de plugins o retoques de Photoshop. En octubre del 2012 edité mi primer photobook en Argentina, titulado Metal Eye Witness, Photobook Vol. 1, con el formato de una revista/álbum deluxe de fotografías a todo color. Más allá de estas dos aventuras gráficas propias, continúo produciendo con frecuencia ediciones limitadas de mi trabajo fotográfico en forma de copias de alta calidad, para un público que no deja de asombrarme por el interés en mi laburo. También tuve la fortuna de realizar las portadas/tapas (y en algunos casos el diseño general también) de una considerable cantidad de discos, así como también producciones/sesiones fotográficas en estudio y exteriores (las que más disfruto) con infinidad de grupos. Ambas tareas me brindan un gran placer; no planeo dejar de hacerlas, mientras me sigan convocando. Si digo que hasta he escrito letras para algunas bandas, e incluso titulado canciones y discos, pecaré de fanfarrón. Pero juro que todo es verdad…
En el 2016 realicé la primera serie (ya había realizado muestras individuales en el pasado) de exposiciones públicas de mis fotografías, por diferentes puntos de Buenos Aires y el interior del país. Bauticé a esta nueva exhibición como Íconos del Rock Pesado, ya que reúne retratos de los próceres del rubro, tanto internacionales como nacionales. Planeo continuar exponiendo y ofreciendo las charlas que acompañan a cada muestra, pero muy esporádicamente; considero que las obras y sus protagonistas lo merecen, aunque no es un ámbito social que me atraiga demasiado.
Por detrás y por delante de mi cámara, no sólo el rock tiene lugar, si no innumerables proyectos y trabajos en rubros como la fotografía de naturaleza y artística, en todas sus formas. Mi labor con la cámara en estas áreas ajenas al rock, aún sigue inédito gráficamente, aunque pueden ver muchas de éstas imágenes en mi otro sitio, FernandoSerani.com. Continúo desarrollando éstas áreas de la fotografía en forma privada, así como también escritos y textos de diferente índole, con ganas de plasmar en un futuro alguna publicación o libro propio.
Desde aquel 1993 donde disparé mis primeras “fotos de rock” en un show de Ramones, y hasta hoy, la fotografía siempre fue una pasión perfectamente conjugada con el amor por el Heavy Metal. He tenido la inmensa fortuna de retratar, entrevistar y escribir sobre casi todos mis artistas preferidos pasados y presentes, y compartir trabajo con personajes inolvidables y otros no tanto. Tanto de la escena internacional como de la local, donde trabajé con y para grupos chicos y grandes. Aquí encontrarán los relatos y las crónicas del pasado y el presente: ellos son mi diario, y mis fotos las postales. Todo lo que he hecho, fue con pasión. Y todo lo que hago actualmente, también. Llámese fotografía, escritura, o Heavy Metal: la Pasión no se contabiliza en ganancias y pérdidas, porque es nada más y nada menos que el cofre que guarda los recuerdos invaluables…

Metal: Eye Witness is not merely another regular Rock & Heavy Metal news website. This space that I occupy within the digital ether is a kind of editorial column of a magazine; a totally subjective literary and visual compendium in which the ruling element is my personal opinion. You may call it a blog with website ambitions, if you would like to do so. Herein you won’t find the last-minute news that are everywhere else, neither daily updates nor press reviews written by commitment. In this site I post articles, interviews, photographic galleries, concert reviews and so on, but upon my taste and discretion. I don’t post things just in order to keep up with the daily work, or to please people. This is my virtual realm dedicated mainly to the musical genre that I love the most, Metal, and about the artists that I admire and enjoy. Everything sublimated through my passions, which are photography and writing. I do not have employees, neither sponsors nor any boss; this is my profession and my work, the Will of One.
Since its beginning in 2008 with a previous and simpler design, Metal: Eye Witness has widely expanded. In addition to the photography section, perhaps the “star” of the website, the other sections for which I am greatly proud and which duly complement my main task are my home-made YouTube Video section, and the Store of “selected items”. I would like to apologize if my oldest works (photography and writing) from the 90’s and 00’s take too much time to find their own place in here. They will begin to appear as soon as I start picking them up from old files, magazines, cassettes, hard drives, books and so many other relics that all of us who work in this field treasure from the start.
I began my career as writer/editor (I reject even today the word “journalist”) and photographer in 1992 as an amateur, and four years later I took up professional studies when I studied at T.E.A. and in the Buenos Aires Fotoclub (Photoclub). Notwithstanding, I believe that the true mastery of a profession and of expertise in itself are obtained in the “trench” and after years of perseverance, hard work and further education. For me, the real school was that same trench in which I was and I currently am as a witness, a participant and also an individual within such an intense and peculiar artistic scene.
Even when I only had a fanzine about my favorite band (“Las Cruces de Sabbath”) and an independent radioshow, I felt condident enough to introduce myself to journalist and publisher César F. Rodríguez in the old Heavy Metal radio, Rock & Pop “La Heavy” radioshow. This is how I got my first photographic comissions for Madhouse magazine, and how I wrote my first outstanding lines in the last stages of the prestigious graphic media once called La Maga. Shortly after this, I became part of Epopeya magazine staff, as I also began to do many collaborations in other publications such as Generación X and Sex & Rock & Roll, which have all been published in Buenos Aires. Later on I participated in more radioshows, while I continued growing as a reporter and photographer in Epopeya, which is something that led me to start travelling abroad. I discovered new cities, new cultures and places, made new friends and enemies as well. All those experiences helped me to tell, both with words and images, the encounters with many of my musical heroes during the trips.
Between the end of the 90’s and the beginning of the new millennium, I worked doing press for Nems Enterprises, a local record label. This I did at the same time that my “jounalistic” career kept on going.
In 1999 I founded with some friends the independant record label/production company Blackstar C.P, thus making space for some of the most relevant artists of the argentine metal scene, as well as helping them grow in other countries. Blackstar C.P. has evolved throughout the years: it started with CD releases (more than 30 albums released so far!) and shows production, and nowadays it also distributes physically and digitally its own titles and other distro albums, in different stores from around the world.
Regarding the graphic work, I continued my adventure in a magazine called Réquiem, which was a sort of continuation of Epopeya and Madhouse mags. In Réquiem, I collaborated both with the printed edition as well as with the online version, and this is a type of work that I carried in a very responsible way together with friends and colleagues in order to endure prestige and quality. Furthermore, I have collaborated (and I still do) with the following magazines: Jedbangers, Efecto Metal, THC and with an endless number of independent zines and publications (and unintentionally, I also collaborated with the most important newspapers of the country). For several years up to today, I have also been a member of the staff of the legendary magazine La Heavy (the former Heavy Rock, perhaps the most important and long-standing Metal magazine for Spanish speaking countries, which has been published since 1983!) and also Kerrang! and its twin online website Mariskalrock.com. These last two magazines are both from Spain and they belong to prestigious rock ‘n roller reporter Vicente “Mariskal” Romero. Besides this, I have collaborated with the world’s most prestigious hard rock magazine: Metal Hammer from Germany. I am also currently a member of the staff of the American magazine Via Omega (born in 2016) which, for its very young age, has rapidly gained an excellent reputation around the world. A rare thing accomplished by spreading not only Metal music, but also graphic/plastic artists, writers and outstanding artists from different music and art styles. Whether it be the digital or printed version, quality is my premise; and the fact that my work has been delivered to the non-Spanish speaking audience, has widened my professional horizons.
By the end of 2008 I published, only for the USA and together with Arts Publications, my first photobook. A 100-page, full color mini-book named exactly like my site, Metal: Eye Witness. In this book I gathered many photos of my first 14 years as a photographer, most of them belonging to the glorious 90’s, a time in which the magic of the film and the manual developing of photos did not know about plugins or Photoshop manipulations. In October 2012 I edited my first photobook in Argentina, titled Metal Eye Witness, Photobook Vol. 1, which has the format of a full-color, deluxe photography magazine/photo album. Besides these two own graphic adventures, I frequently print limited editions of my shots in high quality paper-media, aiming to an audience that doesn’t cease to surprise me with its interest in my work. I have also been lucky enough to produce several album covers (and in some cases, I participated in the general design) for quite a few artists, as well as I have done countless photosessions both in studio and outdoors (which are the ones that I enjoy the most), with a vast number of bands. Both of these types of work bring me great joy, and I do not want to stop doing them, as long as I remain being called to do them. If I claim that I have even written lyrics and named songs and even albums of some bands, I might seem a loud-mouthed prick… but I swear that all of this is true.
In 2016 I put together the first series of gallery exhibitions of my photographs (even I have done one-off exhibits before) in different areas of Buenos Aires and throughout the rest of the country. I named this new exhibition as “Íconos del Rock Pesado” (Heavy Rock Icons), since it reunites pictures of both local and international heroes of this beloved music. My plan is to continue with the exhibitions and to give casual talks in each one of them. Even though it isn’t a social interaction to which I’m very attracted, I believe that the photographs and their protagonists deserve it.
Rock ‘n roll is not the only thing that takes place in front (and on the back) of my camera; I also enjoy shooting for a countless amount of projects related to nature and art of multiple forms. My photographic work in these areas still remains unpublished, although you can see many of these pictures in my other website, FernandoSerani.com. I currently still develop these areas of photography in a private manner, as well as I do with writings and texts from a different type. In the future, I hopefully would like to publish my own books with these works.
Since my beginnings in 1993, a year in which I shot my first “rock photographs” in a Ramones show and until today, photography has always been a passion that combines perfectly with the love that I feel for Heavy Metal. I have had the inmense luck of being able to take pictures, conduct interviews (“conversations”, as I like to call them) and write about my former and current favourite bands, as well as working together with unforgettable and also with better-forget people. Being them both local and international artists, big or small, mainstream or independant. In this website you can find past and present chronicles: these are my journal, and my photographs are my postcards. Everything I have done was with intense passion, as well as all that I still do today. Whether it be photography, writing or Heavy Metal: the passion cannot be measured with profits and losses, since it is nothing more than the chest that contains the most priceless memories…
